Super Hero Symbols Detail
What is a superhero? A fictional – no matter how much we wish otherwise – character who is willing to risk his or her life and safety to battle supervillains, rescue folks from disasters and generally sacrifice his personal life for the greater good. With no expectation of reward, he (it’s usually a he, in spite of the tights) tirelessly saves the day with his unearthly powers, usually obtained because he’s an alien (Superman), demon or god; because he discovers an object that infuses him with power (Green Lantern); or because he’s undergone some kind of mutation. Initially, superhero powers were hokey and inexplicable (again, Green Lantern with your magic ring and weakness where the colour yellow is concerned, we're looking at you), but from the ‘50s onwards, a veneer of scientific plausibility became de rigeur, hence the vast number of grim nuclear accidents (laboratories and nuclear testing grounds are top locations, as Hulk and Dr Manhattan could confirm). In return for his gift of power, the superhero has usually made a sacrifice. Maybe his home planet exploded. Maybe he’s blind. Maybe he’ll never be able to have a real relationship again. And maybe that’ll be very useful for whoever is tasked with writing him a string of lovely companions.
